Biography based on the novel
Yue Ying was Zhuge Liang's wife. Her father was Huang Chengyan, a well-known scholar, whom you might remember as the kind old man who helped Lu Xun find his way out of Zhuge Liang's maze in Chapter 84.
According to the novel and Zhuge Zhan's San Guo Zhi biography, she was not an exceptional beauty — in a letter to Zhuge Liang, her own father called her ugly, though this could be interpreted as paternal humility rather than actual fact. Yue Ying was, however, remarkable for her erudition, being learned in strategy, geography, astronomy, and divination. Zhuge Liang (then living as a hermit and a farmer in Long Zhong, years before he joined Liu Bei) heard of her intelligence, and courted and married her. As husband and wife, they studied together, and she assisted and advised him. Folktales ascribe to her the creation of, not only Zhuge Liang's Wooden Oxen and Flowing Horses, but other fantastic inventions, including cooking robots.
Yue Ying did not long survive her husband, who died in 234 A.D. On her deathbed, she instructed her son Zhuge Zhan to "be loyal and filial."
The name "Yue Ying" was invented by Koei for use in the games, and this lady's actual name is unknown. She is otherwise called Lady Huang.
